M&S new summer range – everything I’d buy under £50

Marks and Spencer new holiday collection

Marks and Spencer has really been hitting it out of the park lately with its fashion and homeware ranges, rivalling high street favourites like Zara and Topshop with a more contemporary edge. But it hasn’t drifted away from its roots; there’s still that dependable quality and wide-ranging appeal that’s kept it in wardrobes for generations. As a shopping editor, most of my days are spent scrolling through endless “new in” pages – from high street staples to luxury labels – and lately, I’ve found myself talking about M&S to just about anyone who’ll listen.

With summer edging closer (and finally teasing us with a bit of sunshine), M&S is quickly becoming my go-to recommendation for a seasonal refresh. The pieces feel affordable but carry that elevated look, often giving far pricier brands a run for their money. Right on cue, just as the temperatures begin to rise, the brand has unveiled its latest summer drop. There are lots of crisp whites and breezy silhouettes that feel just as at home wandering through the English countryside as they do stretched out on a far-flung beach.

From floaty tops to effortlessly pretty dresses, the collection strikes that sweet spot between being stylish and easy to wear, and crucially, nothing feels out of reach price-wise. To make things even easier (and kinder on your wallet), I’ve picked out a few standout pieces I think are destined to fly off the shelves, all coming in at under £50.

Pure Cotton Lace Bib Detail Embroidered Top – £35

This pure cotton lace detail top feels like the kind of piece you’ll reach for again and again on warm mornings when you want to look put together without overthinking it. Light, airy, and effortlessly pretty, it’s made from 100% cotton (with the lace trim crafted from 83% cotton and 17% polyamide), so it promises breathability when the heat really kicks in. The delicate ruffle cap sleeves and soft lace edging give it subtle countryside charm.

It comes in sizes 6 to 24 and costs £36.

Pure Cotton Cutwork Mini Cami Dress – £40

Whether you’re heading off on holiday or simply soaking up a sunny afternoon closer to home, there’s something unbeatable about the ease of a simple summer dress. This cami style has a soft, almost vintage feel, with cutwork detailing tracing the neckline and hem like a quiet nod to timeless design. The spaghetti straps make it ideal for hotter days, and the 100% cotton fabric keeps things breathable and comfortable.

For daytime, I’d pair it with pretty pumps and a straw bag for that relaxed, throw-on-and-go look. Come evening, it transforms beautifully with kitten heels and a small shoulder bag.

The dress is £40 and comes in sizes 6 to 18.

Pure Cotton Denim Classic Shorts – £26

White denim shorts

Denim shorts are a summer wardrobe essential (Image: Marks & Spencer)

No summer wardrobe feels complete without a reliable pair of shorts, and these white denim ones tick all the right boxes. There’s something instantly polished about crisp white denim in the sunshine, though they also come in other shades (including light blue, dark wash, and black) if that’s more your style.

Made from 100% cotton, they’re sturdy yet comfortable, with a flattering high-waisted cut that works with everything from tucked-in tees to floaty blouses. The classic five-pocket design and button-and-zip fastening keep things timeless.

They’re the kind of easy staple you’ll throw on over swimwear on holiday or dress up slightly for a day out exploring.

The shorts are well rated by previous customers, too, currently holding a four-star customer satisfaction rating.

One person said: “Love these, bought them in two shades. Not too short and a lovely shape.”

However, a few shoppers noted they had to size up from their usual size.

Wide Brim Bucket Hat with Linen – £20

A sun hat isn’t just the finishing touch to an outfit—it’s a summer essential, especially when it comes to protecting your face and scalp from strong UV rays. This wide-brimmed design balances practicality with understated style, giving you that effortless, put-together look whether you’re poolside or strolling through a market.

Made from linen with tonal stitching, it has a natural, easy feel and comes in two sizes: small-medium or medium-large.

Cotton Rich Textured Midaxi Column Dress – £36

There’s something about the textured fabric and asymmetric cut of this dress that instantly gives it a cool feel. The midi length adds a touch of elegance, while the asymmetric shape keeps it modern and interesting. Made from a lightweight textured cotton, it’s ideal for warm weather and versatile enough to move from day to night without missing a beat.

Shoppers also say it doesn’t crease so ideal for packing in your suitcase. I’d wear it casually with s a laid-back daytime look, or elevate it with gold jewellery and a pair of nude heels for something a little more special.

“I bought this dress for my holiday in a few weeks. Lovely dress,” said one customer. However, they added that they had to “size up”.

Another shopper added: “The dress material is very soft, extremely comfortable to wear and looks good. It washes well and not ironing needed.”

The dress retails for £36 and is available in sizes 6 to 18.
