Santander is closing 10 of its branches this week as it continues to exit from Britain’s high streets. The banking giant announced in January that it plans to close 44 of its bricks and mortar outlets this year.
It said the move was in response to changes in customer behaviour and it would continue investing in its remaining branches, online and telephone services. By the end of the latest wave of closures, Santander expects to have 305 branches still open for business, including 244 offering the full range of services.
The Santander branches closing this week are:
- Andover – May 12
- Bridgend – May 12
- Cwmbran – May 13
- Enniskillen – May 12
- London, Golders Green – May 13
- Heswall – May 13
- Macclesfield – May 12
- Redditch – May 13
- Stranraer – May 13
- Stratford-upon-Avon – May 12
For account holders who still want to bank face-to-face, a number of options are available. This includes visiting a Post Office where deposits and cash withdrawals can be made.
There might also be a banking hub in your area where people with accounts from various banks can find support, services and manage accounts.
Santander may also send a community banker to your area who you should be able to speak to in private.
To find out if there is a community banker near you, check Santander’s website where you can enter your address, town or postcode to find out.
If none of the above alternatives work for you, then you can of course switch to another bank.
At the time of writing, Barclays is offering £200 for new customers who use its app to switch by May 28.
Conditions apply, including adding at least £2,000 to the new account and a minimum of two direct debits.
First Direct’s 1st Account offers switchers £175 along with access to its Regular Saver account, with a 7% AER/gross rate.
New customers need to switch using the Current Account Switch Service, deposit £1,000, make five or more debit card payments and log on to digital banking.
All the above has to be done within 45 days to qualify for the offer.
