World War 2 film from Russian perspective with 100% rating is streaming for free | Films | Entertainment

Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky is widely considered one of the greatest directors in history.

Back in 1962, he released Ivan’s Childhood, his directorial debut in the Soviet Union, about World War 2 from the Russian perspective.

The Soviet war drama, based on Vladimir Bogomolov’s 1957 short story Ivan, focuses on an orphaned boy whose parents were killed by the invading Germans and follows his experiences through World War 2.

The movie, which has a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, shot Tarkovsky to international fame after it won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film Festival.

The picture was also the Soviet entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, but shockingly wasn’t accepted as a nominee.

Swedish director Ingmar Bergman praised the film as a major influence on his work like The Seventh Seal. Ivan’s Childhood is now officially streaming for free on the Mosfilm YouTube channel (see above) alongside many other Russian classics, including other masterpieces by Tarkovsky.
