Hard water stains will vanish with 1 cleaning hack – not white vinegar

A woman was at her wit’s end with hard water stains and, after trying multiple methods with no luck, one simple yet handy tip came to the rescue. Hard water stains can be difficult to keep on top of, taking fixture finishes from gleaming to cloudy and murky.

They’re caused by a build up of calcium and magnesium deposits, and are typically removed using acidic solutions like white vinegar, lemon juice, or specialised cleaning products. But what if those don’t work?

This was the predicament one woman found herself in, with tough and persistent stains marring her Kohler shower fixtures. She’d tried all the standard solutions to no avail but one tip restored her bathroom – steel wool.

She took to Reddit to share before and after images of her shower which show a clear, effective result and penned: “I tried so many recommended solutions to remove hard water stains from my fixtures and the ONLY thing that finally worked was 0000 steel wool.

“Thank you SO MUCH… to everyone who tried to resolve this. Attached before and after pics.”

In the comments section, people were keen to share their thoughts. One person asked for a breakdown of her “entire process” and precisely how she “used the 0000 steel wool”.

The woman explained: “The steel wool part was so easy. I just took it out of the package and used it dry. I started gently rubbing it on the metal and immediately the residue started coming off.

“I did circular polishing motion across the fixture and it was done in about three minutes. There was some steel residue in the tub which I wiped up with a damp paper towel. That was literally it!”

She added: “To clarify, I used no other products. Just dry 0000 steel wool that I ordered in desperation from Amazon.”

One Reddit user wasn’t convinced and said: “A mixture of vinegar and dawn will do this too. You don’t need steel wool. Source: I do this once a month on our fixtures.”

But the woman replied: “I tried this and it didn’t work! I think there was just a ton of build up from previous tenants though. I’m guessing if I keep this clean regularly dawn and vinegar will work wonders!”

Another said: “It looks amazing! Now, scrub over it with wax paper to prevent buildup coming back!”

And another shared: “I use 0000 on lots of things including glass shower doors. Even mirrors. I’ve even removed fine scratches with it on a mirror. It’s awesome on the thick soap grime as well. In fact, I used it as a final polish when refinishing a retro wood low boy cabinet.”

But someone else cautioned: “Kohler is still built tough. I would not take steel wool to cheaper fixtures that probably only have a thin layer of chrome on them, or the ones that are plastic painted to look like metal.”
