Man charged with operating boat under the influence in crash that killed 2 kids

A New Jersey man surrendered to authorities Friday on charges that he was operating a boat under the influence in July when two children, ages 7 and 9 years, were thrown into the water and died, police said.

Stephen Schneider, 63, of Bayville, was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree reckless vessel homicide, along with one count each of operating a vessel under the influence and reckless operation of a vessel, New Jersey State Police said.

On July 19, at around 9:09 p.m., a 30-foot Tidewater Custom 280 vessel struck a channel marker in the Intercoastal Waterway, throwing a 9-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy into the water, according to state police and an NBC Philadelphia report.

The case remains under investigation, state police said.

Online court records did not show the case as of Saturday, and it was not clear whether Schneider had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
