Richard Gere ‘doesn’t care’ what people think after decades of Hollywood fame

Richard Gere has spent decades in Hollywood, but he hasn’t let fame go to his head — at least not without a fight.

The actor serves as an executive producer of the documentary “Wisdom of Happiness,” which explores the Dalai Lama’s teachings and the pursuit of lasting joy. Gere has practiced Buddhism for more than 40 years.

Asked how he keeps fame and ego in check after decades in Hollywood, Gere admitted he isn’t immune.

“Everyone goes through that,” the 77-year-old told Fox News Digital. “Everyone has the forces of greed, anger, self-cherishing, impatience, jealousy, the whole gamut. Everyone has that. So I think from Buddhist training and looking at these afflictive emotions and seeing where they’re coming from, they’re not innate in me. They’re kind of add-ons to basic clarity of the mind.”

“It’s said that the mind is clear and knowing, so clear, vast, no limits,” he said. “It has a sense of knowing, wisdom. The other stuff is just kind of add-ons, like dark clouds coming through. They come, and they go.”

Gere also isn’t looking to Hollywood for happiness. The longtime leading man has learned that the perks only go so far.

“Well, clearly, happiness and peace [don’t] come from the outside,” he explained. “It comes from inside all of us, and it’s there. You don’t have to create that. But I think it’s removing the bad habits, removing the causes that make us feel bad ultimately. But we’re in control of our experience for sure. We’re responsible for it. If you don’t like the way things are, you change it. And all things are changeable. They’re changing all the time anyhow. Probably when we fight the change is when we feel the worst.”

For Gere, that also means questioning how much material success really matters.

“Well, what’s really important? Is it what I own or what I am?” Gere said. “I’m not going to get anything from the outside that is permanently going to make me happy.”

“Momentarily, yes, like a piece of chocolate, but that’s not permanent, is it?” he joked.

Gere has also found happiness far from the spotlight. These days, the star splits his time between Spain and upstate New York.

“Well, Spain is my wife’s country, so she gets super happy there,” he said with a smile. “And I’ll tell you when my wife’s super happy, I’m super happy. And I grew up in the Northeast. I feel very close to that. And my early family memories, and my grandfather’s farm in Pennsylvania, I think, had a huge impact. It still does.”

Gere and his wife, Spanish publicist Alejandra Silva, have two sons together. Silva also has a son from a previous relationship, while Gere shares his eldest son, Homer, with ex-wife Carey Lowell.

“My first son is 26 now,” Gere said. “And I talked to him about what he’s going through right now. And I remember myself as a 25-year-old, 26-year-old person. Of course, my concerns were different. I certainly was more susceptible to what people said and thought about me and about anything else. And frankly, I don’t care that much about it right now, what anyone thinks or says.”

Looking back, Gere recalled growing up in “an extraordinary Christian family” with roots in a small town in Pennsylvania. His father, Homer Gere, spent his childhood milking cows, and both his parents instilled in him the importance of helping others — values he carried with him when he discovered Buddhism in his 20s.

“I grew up with that imprint, I think, from my dad and my mom, but there was something about Buddhism that kind of went beyond that and was willing to explore the larger questions,” Gere said. “What is reality? What am I? What is a human being?”

“Am I capable of much greater things than just worrying about myself?” he continued. “And certainly, Buddhism wanted to engage those things [for me].”

But the lessons Gere learned from farmers have never left him.

“I think that farmers have a balanced sense of the universe,” he said. “When the rain doesn’t come, who are you going to complain to? It’s about acceptance of things. It doesn’t make you happy when the rain doesn’t come, or it comes too much, but the forces of the universe are just the way they are. And along with it, hard work.”

“Farmers work really hard,” Gere said. “I still have the kerosene lantern that my grandfather used. He would get up at four o’clock in the morning and go do the first milking of the cows.”

“He still gets up at 3:30 in the morning, does his practice, works on his mind, works on his heart, works on his motivation, purifies himself every day,” Gere said.

“He’s a human being, and he continues, as I said, to work on himself,” he continued. “If we want to achieve what he’s achieved, to become really such an extraordinary, genuine person, we’ve got to do the work.”

“My wife was in tears,” he recalled. “And I thought for his 90th birthday, this would be a great summation of an extraordinary life, well-lived, a meaningful life dedicated to others.”

But as the film came together, Gere said its message began to feel increasingly urgent.

Gere said he hopes the documentary reminds people they have the capacity for compassion.

“The beginning point, and maybe the end point, is basic kindness, a warm heart and generosity of spirit,” he said.
