Netflix subscribers who have eagerly binged the new cult drama Unchosen should take note of a gripping film from last year with a strikingly similar premise that is heading to streaming imminently.

The six-part series starring Molly Windsor, Asa Butterfield, and Christopher Eccleston and created by Julie Gearey launched on the service last week to huge acclaim.

It centres on a young wife and mother raised within a devoutly religious sect who embarks on a journey of liberation when a troubled outsider, Sam (played by Fra Fee), arrives in their community.

Unchosen has swiftly captured the hearts of subscribers and currently holds the top spot on Netflix’s top 10 TV chart, reports the Mirror.

For those already hooked and eager to explore further stories about cults and communes, an American film with a comparable narrative set in the 1980s was released in cinemas last year and is set to arrive on Paramount+ later this week.

Stone Cold Fox stars Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) as Fox, a young woman who becomes entangled with the leader of an abusive, drug-dealing commune.

When she escapes in search of her family, ringleader Goldie (Krysten Ritter) abducts her sister and dispatches corrupt officer Sergeant Billy Breaker (Kiefer Sutherland) to hunt her down.

An independent film marking Sophie Tabet’s feature directorial debut, Stone Cold Fox garnered favourable reviews from audiences upon its release in US cinemas last November. It will at last be widely accessible to stream on Paramount+ from this Friday (1st May).

One IMDb user awarded it a 10/10 and urged fans “don’t miss out”, writing: “Loved it from start to finish. So many unexpected twists and turns.”

Another enthusiastic viewer declared: “SUCH a fun watch!!! Stone Cold Fox is a stylish, entertaining crime thriller that fully embraces its era while delivering a sharp, engaging story.

“The film stands out for its confident tone and cool, effortless atmosphere, blending suspense, action, and character-driven drama in a way that keeps viewers hooked from start to finish. Its pacing is tight, and the plot unfolds with just enough twists to stay unpredictable without losing focus.”

Another viewer hailed it a “terrific debut feature” for Tabet, claiming it “delivers on every front” with “a strong cast, striking cinematography that vividly captures the 1980s, and a gripping, fast-paced story capped by an unexpected twist.”

A final admirer teased a “shocking ending”, writing: “Not giving anything away but omg my jaw dropped at the end. Amazing twist.”

Confessing they wouldn’t have given the film a second glance were it not for Shipka in the leading role, they too awarded it 10/10 and was delighted not to have passed it by.

“Destressing after a long day to watch this masterpiece of a movie was just what I needed,” they continued. “The acting was amazing, the plot, the story, everything was solid A+.”

Stone Cold Fox will be released on Friday, 1st May on Paramount+.
